Highlights for your Coffee crop nutrition
Most coffee plantations are in regions of year-round rains, which gives rise to nutrient leaching. Thus, the nutritional program must ensure that all growth necessities are available at any time. The bean production has a biennial (or alternating) nature, so at any stage the plant’s physiological status affects the yield of both current year and successive one.
Boron
Boron is a critical element for coffee cultivation and is highly related to yield increase. Boron is involved in multiple functions, related to growth, mobility, flowering and fruit setting. Boron is preferably taken by the roots, but at times of low transpiration foliar application is essential.
Calcium
Calcium is important for both growth and fruit development. Calcium, in synergy with boron, provides strength and flexibility to the cell walls, reducing fruit splitting and fungal infections. Calcium uptake is critical throughout the crop cycle, with a pick at 120-150 days after flowering.
Potassium
Potassium is critical for bean yield and quality. It improves bean size and coloring and affects cup quality (flavor). In addition, potassium may help suppressing Cercospora coffeicola infection. The optimal N:K ratio in coffee nutrition is 1:1.
Nitrogen
Nitrogen is involved in essential metabolic processes in both vegetative and reproductive phases. Optimal nitrogen levels throughout the year is essential for the yield of both the present year and the successive year.
Pre-flowering: Application of B, Zn, Mn, and Cu will support better cell division, flower induction and vitality. Cu has additional value improving plant health and reducing Rust diseases.
Flowering: Maintain balanced N:K ratio with added micronutrients to ensure growth and flower vitality. Seaweed extracts may support pollen quality and berry uniformity.
Fruit-set and maturation: Increased rates of K and Ca are essential to ensure proper setting, development and quality of fruits.
Harvest: Maintain sufficient K supply until harvest end. |
